Tips for Motorcycle Safety
Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week
is designed to seek broader recognition of motorcycles in
the overall transportation mix. The principle concerns are
to increase driver recognition of motorcyclists in traffic,
while encouraging motorcyclists to engage in the overall safe
operation of their motorcycles. That is to educate motorists
to ALWAYS exercise extra awareness of their surroundings especially
at intersections and also for motorcyclists to ride extra
defensively and be prepared to take evasive action under any
situation.
Here are 5 simple rules for riders and 5 for motorists that
will help in keeping our streets safe:
Five rules for riders:
- Get Trained and Licensed - Take a Motorcycle Safety Course
through the Sask Safety Council and get licensed by the
Saskatchewan Government Insurance.
- Wear Protective Gear - Wear proper protective riding gear,
most importantly a helmet made to Department of Transportation
(DOT) standards. Wear ALL your gear ALL the time.
- Ride Unimpaired - Ride unimpaired, never drinking or using
other drugs before getting on a motorcycle. Not only is
this unsafe, it is also illegal.
- Ride Within Your Limits - Stay within your personal limits,
never riding faster or farther than your abilities can handle.
- Be a Lifelong Learner - Be lifelong learners, regularly
returning for refresher riding courses.
Five rules for motorists:
- Look Out for Motorcyclists - Use your eyes and mirrors
to see what’s around. LOOK TWICE before entering intersections
or changing lanes. You may just save someone's life.
- Don't Be Distracted - Hang up and drive, put down the
food, the pet, the personal grooming gear, the CD, and the
reading material and save it for later.
- Give Two-Wheelers Some Room - Don't tailgate or get too
close side-by-side.
- Use Your Turn Signals - Signal your intentions. It's also
the law.
- Keep it in the Car - Don’t throw trash and cigarettes
out the window, and securely lash down cargo that can fall
out on the road and be a deadly hazard.
