A fellow from Europe on one of my Ducati forums posted up pics of this beast in response to a thread about dreaded winter. I am waiting for him to let me know details about the bike or if he has anything to do with it.

WOW......ideas for the streetfighter Greg Smiley

QCMA here in regina does run ice dice events at Oyama park during the winter...    Perfect place to come out and play..

I'm interested in the tire design too, be a fun use for the kat this winter lol

Thanks! (pics are showing up now too), I checked into making a set of tires like that and the picks will cost about $1200 + ($2 each was the cheapest I could find, post up if you can find cheaper).

For your use the "studs" you have work great.

I've watched the guys in Saskatoon race for a couple years on their dirt bikes with the "sharpened screws" studs and they could go to full lean and come of the corner leaned over on one wheel like it was pavement on a 30 degree day.

We're still in the talks of doing some tires and finding somewhere to ride.  I'll let you know how ours go and get some pics if we head out for some winter fun!  Nothing like a brisk day and some two stroke smoke!

Would be fun on a street bike though as well!

Vinny....I got more info for ya...here is where these guys ride.
http://www.iceroadracing.net/

Here is what he said about the tires.
Quote
The setup isnīt that hard. All the spikes are handmade on old tires. Quite simple, you just need to be careful.

We use a simple "bolt-doublewasher-nut" setup, then gring the end of the bolt down. Pretty simply, but time consuming to do.. Oh.. and youīll need tubes.. Use a stainless steel bolt and nut.. We use 35mm long bolts front and 40mm rear. And itīs a good idea to talk to a racer and get some used slicks, since they have a harder shoulder.

Jebus, talk about time consuming!  Those tires do look freakin awesome though.  I think I will just stick with studding up with screws this winter.

Push through snowmobile studs would be much simpler and quicker (though more money) than using standard screws and sharpening them. The biggest issue would be clearance to the swingarm and chain. Have to do some serious measuring of clearance, as carbide tipped studs would make short work of an aluminum swingarm. So far the shortest studs I've seen are 0.700" long. That would clear the swingarm at a standstill, but tire growth at speed (particularly with the added mass of the studs) would probably eat up clearance.

A smaller rear tire might help, but I doubt that they would work on the 5.5" or 6" wide rear rim of most modern sportbikes.

Back to the drawing board...
