SGI has proposed 3.7% rate increase, as well as re-balancing to be effective in August 2012. Follow the link below to see how it could affect your vehicles.

Newer sport bikes taking a pretty good hit again.

Just saw that, my Ninja will go from $1362/year to  $1770.  Crazy.

The sub-400cc bikes are looking better and better.

Holy ****! 30%,

Upon further checking of random bikes, (my wife's 2009 Ninja 250, newer-model Busas just to see how much those poor folk are getting hit) it seems to be about 30% across all sport bikes, regardless of engine size?

Cheaper, but still going up 30%. If I remember the last increase, which was 20-25% for sport bikes, the sub-400s only went up 10-17% ? Those numbers are somewhere on the site, but I can't find them at the moment.

Might just do day permits on my Buell Cyclone and Triumph Daytona this year. I ended up riding the Buell twice last year, and the Triumph three times... and had plates on them all summer. A complete waste of money.

The ultimate cheater bike would be a Jap-import RG400 Gamma. You'd get under the 400cc cutoff, and then do a 570cc Lance Gamma RG500 top end.  You'd end up with a 150hp, 350lbs bike that can be plated for next to nothing! And only a few more years until these are antiques.

I go from $240/yr to $315/yr.  It's not horrible, but yet, why should my plates be going up at all?  I haven't made an accident claim in over 15 years, and have NEVER made a claim on a bike!

1804/year for them to write off my bike if I was ever dumb enough to claim anything. I have a feeling that in SGI's eyes an 03 with 74,000 kms is worth jack **** right up until it's time to set the reserve for the salvage auction.

Socialized insurance is the answer. I was happy with it when I was a 17-year old farm kid - with one accident - trying to plate my first car, and later when I was a broke uni student. Now that I'm 27 and have a spotless record for the past 5 years, I'm not as big a fan of it.

The safety discount is the answer; if the discounts keep going up into the 30 and 40 per cent range, that'll make these rates more accurate reflections of reality.

The safety discount shouldn't have a cap, in my opinion.  If you've been a spotless driver for 40 years, then you've earned an 80% discount.

How are we compared to the rest of the country? I know some Provinces are not Government regulated. Getting a little pricey to ride here, especially after you add a package policy.  dunno I'm with Kevin, might be time to reconsider if riding a sport bike is worth the price. $1770 give me a break!
