SSBA Collaborating to Introduce Motorcycle Parking in Downtown Regina

Further to some discussion that has been ongoing on the sasksportbike forums, I am proud to announce that the City of Regina has accepted a motion on behalf of David Parker for the incorporation of specifically designated and affordable motorcycle and scooter parking in the Downtown district, as part of the City's downtown revitalization project.

This is an idea which has been brought forward several times before among motorcyclists in Regina but was relegated for lack of a suitable torch-bearer.  In early February of this year I was approached by David Parker (aka p4nz3r) with the idea, and after a brief discussion he expressed a willingness to champion the initiative if the SSBA would lend its support.  What followed was a carefully prepared motion based on real foreseeable benefits, as well as precedents taken from many other cities and areas which already use such a system, most notably Vancouver, BC.  David has done a remarkable job in researching and preparing the motion and the SSBA is excited to be playing a role in creating real positive representation for motorcyclists as Regina redevelops its downtown.  Also supporting this initiative are the Regina Regional Opportunities Commission, the Regina Chamber of Commerce, and the Regina Hotel Association to name a few. In mid-March, the motion was presented to the City Clerk, approved and sent on directly to the office of the City Planner, which will be in contact with Mr. Parker regarding progress made with the initiative.

Both the motion and the SSBA's letter of support are attached below; I encourage you to read through them and leave your comments.  It should be noted that these documents include contact information for Mr. Parker that should not be misused.

As Saskatchewan's fastest growing motorcycle association, the SSBA is poised to represent the interests of its members in the community.  Our mission statement reflects this, and we value opportunities such as this so that we may deliver.  Please join me in thanking Mr. Parker for his excellent work!  With luck and persistence, we will see our efforts come to fruition.

Yours In Motorcycling,

Tom Schutzman

Excellent work!

I've already contacted city hall regarding motorcycle parking downtown, hopefully with a more formal approach it'll show them it's really wanted/needed.

Thanks!

Is there anyone on the board here with any contacts with Saskatoon City Council?  It would be nice if we could get a similar initiative started here!   thumbs

Are there any plans to start a letter/telephone campaign by members to the city councilors/mayor. This was very effective last summer (and they'll be starting again now that the weather is warmer) when the people on Albert St began lobbying for noise restrictions (as in no after market pipes) the mayor made it a priority.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tom and the SSBA Team for helping me and providing their support with this initiative. Moreover, I would like to thank all of you for your patience and understanding with this project.

Update:

As it stands today, the Construction Crew has the Motion in hand and they are reviewing the possibility of implementing Motorcycle Parking. Since Regina Downtown is going to go through a major reconstruction -light standard for oncoming traffic are already up on 12th Ave. for Westbound traffic- and Victoria Park construction is going to begin shortly, I would like to let the construction team really think about how they are going to implement this and then I will inquire for further info in a month. Apparently, they have tons of projects on the go.. and ours is just one of them.

We have to give them time and respect the fact that this did not need to go to Council or a Committee- it went STRAIGHT to the Planning Team!  Rock on

Also, for those in Saskatoon, whomever would like to take the initiative, you can contact me and I can help with your Motion. This can also stand for those in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and other cities across SK.

Cheers!

This is a big, impressive accomplishment. My major hats off to David Parker, and the SSBA Council for following this through. I know a lot of work gets put into drafting/researching these motions, so your effort is not ill-recognized.

This is also a major step in establishing the SSBA's presence in the city of Regina, so for that, congratulations. I think it would be GREAT to put forth similar motions to the Councils in Saskatoon and Moose Jaw specifically.
