2010
Saskatchewan Safety Council
Motorcycle Safety Course

The Saskatchewan Safety Council is pleased to offer two motorcycle safety courses:

1.  MTP – Regular Course

     This 20-hour program is designed to help prepare you to ride a motorcycle in a traffic environment. Here are
     some of the topics covered in the Motorcycle Training Course

    * Pre-Ride Check
    * Mounting & Dismounting a motorcycle
    * Riding position
    * Cold & Warm Starting of a motorcycle
    * Shoulder checks & eye movement
    * Starting & stopping a motorcycle
    * Slow speed manoeuvres
    * Gear shifting
    * Riding tactics for the urban rider
    * Traffic Simulation
    * Starting on a hill
    * Higher speed manoeuvres - Push Steering
    * Emergency manoeuvres - Braking & Swerving
    * Final skills test - Motorcycle Operators Skill Test - MOST

Motorcycles are provided for you to learn on. Our instructors are highly experienced riders and qualified trainers in motorcycle safety.

The cost for the program is $400.00 plus GST.

2.   Group Riding and Practical Street Skills

     This is an opportunity for riders that already have taken and passed the regular course and are currently riding
     on the street with their own motorcycle. Students will receive constant constructive feedback from the
     instructor, by radio, about their riding when on the street. This class is 4 hours long which includes about 1
     hour of classroom time and 3 hours of group riding. Class size is small with 3 riders for each instructor.
     Students must supply their own street legal motorcycle.

     The class will cover:

    * Group riding dynamics
    * Street riding skills review
    * Student concerns and questions on SGI Class 6 Endorsement
    * Signals and shoulder checks
    * Lane positioning and blocking
    * One way streets, residential areas, multi lane roadways

The cost for the program is $80.00 plus GST.

The following information applies directly to the Regular 20 hour course.

Mandatory equipment for All Students

    * An approved helmet (DOT, Snell, CSA, ANSI)
    * Over the ankle boots (Hiking boots, Work boots, Motorcycle boots) High-top runners are not allowed.
    * Safety glasses, Goggles or Face shield
    * Motorcycle jacket or other heavy weight jean or leather jacket
    * Full length pants or motorcycle pants and/or chaps
    * Full finger, tight fitting leather gloves
    * Rain jacket and pants (optional but highly recommended)

Tip:    If you are not already riding, we suggest borrowing riding gear & wait until after completing
          the course before making expensive purchases. Tips on what to buy will be given on the course.
          Contact the Saskatchewan Safety Council for more information.

Course Rules

    * The Saskatchewan Safety Council will absorb the cost of accidental damage to our motorcycles but damage costs resulting from deliberate misuse of the motorcycle will be invoiced to the student.
    * Riders must have appropriate riding gear each day. We will ride the first day. If you show up without correct gear - YOU WILL NOT RIDE!
    * Riders that miss part of the course will not be allowed to continue
    * Your safety and the safety of others during training are of top priority and we will strictly enforce our safety rules. Students may be asked to leave the class for disruptive, dangerous or for safety reasons.

Course Objectives

    * To help you develop control skills and riding techniques adequate for the demands of urban traffic.
    * To ensure that you are aware of your own limitations in skill, knowledge, and physical abilities, relative to the demands of motorcycling.
    * To develop an understanding of the hazards and problems which motorcyclists face and how to deal with them.
    * To provide information to help you purchase clothing, helmets, motorcycles and other equipment.
    * To provide the skills and knowledge required to pass the road test and become an expert rider.

Hints

    * The course continues no matter what the weather conditions, so we suggest that you bring a change of clothes and foul weather riding gear. We will ride even when raining.
    * The course is physically demanding. You will be pushing a motorcycle with a rider in the initial stages.
    * Lunch is not provided. For weekend courses bring a lunch and refreshments on Saturday and Sunday. Lunch time will a “working lunch” on site in the classroom.
    * Water is available at the site, but you might want to bring your own.

Training Bikes

The Saskatchewan Motorcycle Training Program offers a variety of bikes. We have Dual Purpose, Cruiser and Sport bikes from Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Buell and range in size from 125cc to 500cc. We encourage students to try each of the different types of bikes. It is the one chance that you have to determine the style of motorcycle that may be best for you.

No matter what size you are or how much experience you have, our instructors can usually match you to a motorcycle fitted for your needs. Our lowest seat height is 25 inches.

Motorcycle Licensing
The Saskatchewan Safety Council offers “M” endorsement testing for students who successfully complete the MTP Regular Course. Call the office to book testing times. Testing will run from mid June to the end of September.
